Federal Courthouse Facing Budget Ax

The policy-making body for the federal courts asked whether to keep the courts without resident judges. The committee will then forward a report to the Judicial Conference, which could decide whether to close any of the court sites at its September meeting. Fayetteville's courtroom was ranked 60th, suggesting it is the least-likely to close.

The Army's Fort Bragg federal military reservation generates the bulk of the criminal cases handled at the Fayetteville courthouse. Although Fort Bragg has a new courthouse and other court facilities, those are devoted to military personnel accused of violating military law. Soldiers or civilians who violate civilian laws on Fort Bragg are handled by the U.S. District Court. The Federal Building
